1 – Phil Goyette (1972-1973)

Born in 1933 in Lachine, Quebec. Goyette played for the Montreal Canadiens (1956–1969), St. Louis Blues (1969–1972), and Buffalo Sabres (1972–1974). His coaching tenure with the Islanders was his only stint as a head coach in the NHL.

2 – Earl Ingarfield Sr. (1973)

Born in 1934 in Lethbridge, Alberta. Ingarfield played for the New York Rangers (1958–1966), Pittsburgh Penguins (1967–1970), and Oakland Seals (1970–1971). He didn’t coach any other NHL teams besides his brief period with the Islanders.

3 – Al Arbour (1973-1986, 1988-1994, 2007)

Born in 1932 in Sudbury, Ontario. Arbour played for the Detroit Red Wings (1953–1954), Chicago Blackhawks (1957–1958), Toronto Maple Leafs (1958–1961), and St. Louis Blues (1967–1971). He also coached the St. Louis Blues (1970–1973). Arbour is the most celebrated coach in Islanders’ history, leading the team to four consecutive Stanley Cups.

4 – Terry Simpson (1986-1988)

Born in 1943 in Brantford, Ontario. Simpson did not play in the NHL. Outside of his tenure with the Islanders, he coached the Philadelphia Flyers (1993–1994).

5 – Lorne Henning (1994-1995, 2000-2001)

Born in 1952 in Melfort, Saskatchewan. Henning played for the New York Islanders (1972–1981). He didn’t coach any other NHL teams as a head coach apart from the Islanders but has been an assistant with various teams.

6 – Mike Milbury (1995-1997, 1998-1999)

Born in 1952 in Brighton, Massachusetts. Milbury played for the Boston Bruins (1974–1987). He also coached the Boston Bruins (1989–1991).

7 – Rick Bowness (1996-1997)

Born in 1955 in Moncton, New Brunswick. Bowness played for the Atlanta Flames (1975–1976) and Detroit Red Wings (1976–1977). He also coached the Ottawa Senators (1992–1995), Boston Bruins (1997), Phoenix Coyotes (2003–2004), and Dallas Stars (2019-present as of 2021).

8 – Bill Stewart (1999-2000)

Born in 1957 in Toronto, Ontario. Stewart did not play in the NHL but had a brief coaching stint with the Islanders.

9 – Butch Goring (2000-2001)

Born in 1949 in St. Boniface, Manitoba. Goring played for the Los Angeles Kings (1969–1980) and New York Islanders (1980–1985). His tenure with the Islanders was his only NHL head coaching role.

10 – Peter Laviolette (2001-2003)

Born in 1964 in Norwood, Massachusetts. Laviolette did not play in the NHL but went on to coach the Carolina Hurricanes (2003–2009), Philadelphia Flyers (2009–2013), and Nashville Predators (2014–2019).

11 – Steve Stirling (2003-2006)

Born in 1950 in Clarkson, Michigan. Stirling did not play in the NHL and his coaching stint with the Islanders was his only head coaching role in the league.

12 – Ted Nolan (2006-2008)

Born in 1958 in Garden River First Nation, Ontario. Nolan didn’t play in the NHL but also coached the Buffalo Sabres (1995–1997, 2013–2015).

13 – Scott Gordon (2008-2010)

Born in 1963 in Brockton, Massachusetts. Gordon played for the Quebec Nordiques (1989–1991). He also coached the Philadelphia Flyers (2018–2019).

14 – Jack Capuano (2010-2017)

Born in 1966 in Cranston, Rhode Island. Capuano did not play in the NHL. After his tenure with the Islanders, he became an associate coach for the Ottawa Senators.

15 – Doug Weight (2017-2018)

Born in 1971 in Warren, Michigan. Weight played for the New York Rangers (1991–1993), Edmonton Oilers (1993–2001), St. Louis Blues (2001–2008), Anaheim Ducks (2008), and New York Islanders (2008–2011). His coaching stint with the Islanders was his only head coaching role in the NHL.

16 – Barry Trotz (2018-Present as of 2021)

Born in 1962 in Dauphin, Manitoba. Trotz didn’t play in the NHL but has had a prolific coaching career, leading the Nashville Predators (1998–2014) and Washington Capitals (2014–2018), with whom he won a Stanley Cup in 2018.

17 – Lane Lambert – (2022-present)

Lane Lambert was born on November 18, 1964. His playing career in the NHL consisted of playing for the Quebec Nordiques, New York Rangers, and Detroit Red Wings.
