3 – Tommy Ivan (1947-1954)

Born in 1911 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. While his playing career is not widely recorded, Ivan was an influential figure in the Detroit Red Wings’ history. He also coached the Chicago Black Hawks (1954-1976).

4 – Jimmy Skinner (1954-1958)

Born in 1937 in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. Barkley played for the Detroit Red Wings (1963–1966) and the San Francisco Seals (1967–1968).

Born in 1930 in Kincardine, Ontario, Canada. He played for the Detroit Red Wings (1951–1955) and Chicago Black Hawks (1955–1959).

12 – Bobby Kromm (1977-1980)

Born in 1926 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Kromm didn’t have a notable NHL playing career. Apart from the Red Wings, he coached the Winnipeg Jets in the WHA.

13 – Ted Lindsay (1980-1981)

Born in 1925 in Renfrew, Ontario, Canada. Lindsay played primarily for the Detroit Red Wings (1944–1957, 1964–1965) and also for the Chicago Black Hawks (1957–1960).

14 – Wayne Maxner (1980-1982)

Born in 1942 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Maxner played for the Detroit Red Wings (1963–1965) and Boston Bruins (1965–1969).

15 – Nick Polano (1982-1985)

18 – Jacques Demers (1986-1990)

Born in 1944 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Demers coached multiple teams, including the Quebec Nordiques (1979–1980), St. Louis Blues (1983–1986), Montreal Canadiens (1992–1995), and Tampa Bay Lightning (1997–1998).

19 – Bryan Murray (1990-1993)

Born in 1942 in Shawville, Quebec, Canada. Apart from the Red Wings, Murray coached the Washington Capitals (1981–1990), Florida Panthers (1997–1998), and Ottawa Senators (2005–2007).

20 – Scotty Bowman (1993-2002)

Born in 1933 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Bowman is regarded as one of the greatest hockey coaches of all time. He played minor league hockey but never played in the NHL. Over his coaching career, Bowman also led the St. Louis Blues (1967–1971), Montreal Canadiens (1971–1979), Buffalo Sabres (1979–1987), and Pittsburgh Penguins (1991–1993) to various successes.

21 – Dave Lewis (2002-2005)

Born in 1953 in Kindersley, Saskatchewan, Canada. Lewis played for the New York Islanders (1973–1975), Los Angeles Kings (1975–1979), New Jersey Devils (1982–1987), and the Detroit Red Wings (1979–1982). After his playing career, he had coaching stints with the Boston Bruins (2006–2007) and was an assistant with multiple teams.

22 – Mike Babcock (2005-2015)

Born in 1963 in Manitouwadge, Ontario, Canada. Babcock played in the U.K. for the Whitley Warriors (1987–1988) but transitioned into coaching soon after. He has also been the head coach for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (2002–2004) and Toronto Maple Leafs (2015–2019).

23 – Jeff Blashill (2015-2021)

Born in 1973 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, USA. Blashill played as a goalie for the Ferris State Bulldogs during his college years. Before taking the reins of the Red Wings, he was a successful coach in the American Hockey League, especially with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

24 – Derek Lalonde (2022 – present)

Derek Lalonde was born August 18, 1972. He hails from the city of Brasher Falls, New York.
