The Detroit Pistons are a professional basketball team based in Detroit, Michigan. Founded in 1941 as the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons, they are one of the oldest continuously operating professional basketball teams in the nation. In 1948, they joined the Basketball Association of America (BAA) which merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949 to form the NBA. The team moved to Detroit in 1957, and since then, have won three NBA championships: in 1989, 1990, and 2004.

  1. Carl Bennett (1948-1950): Bennett, born in 1907 in Brooklyn, New York, served as the Pistons’ first head coach. There are no records of Bennett coaching other teams.
  2. Murray Mendenhall (1950-1954): Born in 1908 in Clear Creek, Indiana, Mendenhall coached the Pistons before moving on to the Packers of the NFL as an assistant coach (1955-1956).
  3. Paul Birch (1954-1957): Born in 1908 in Yonkers, New York, Birch had previously been an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics (1950-1954). Birch had a playing career from 1934-1939.
  4. Charles Eckman (1957-1958): Eckman, born in 1921 in Wilmington, Delaware, served as a coach for the Fort Wayne Pistons, then became the head coach when the team moved to Detroit. He also served as a head coach for Duquesne University (1958-1963).
  5. Red Rocha (1958-1960): Rocha, from Hilo, Hawaii, was born in 1923. He served as a player-coach for the Pistons during his tenure. He had a playing career from 1947-1957 with various teams.
  6. Dick McGuire (1960-1963): McGuire was born in 1926 in New York City, New York. He had a playing career from 1949-1960 with the New York Knicks and the Pistons, and he also coached the Knicks (1965-1968).
  7. Charles Wolf (1963-1964): Wolf, from Milford, Ohio, was born in 1927. He served as a coach for the Cincinnati Royals (1964-1966) and the Kansas City Kings (1973-1977).
  8. Dave DeBusschere (1964-1967): DeBusschere, a native of Detroit, Michigan, was born in 1940. He served as a player-coach for the Pistons. His playing career spanned 1962-1974 with the Pistons and New York Knicks.
  9. Donnie Butcher (1967-1968): Butcher was born in 1936 in Leitchfield, Kentucky. He had a playing career from 1961-1966 with the New York Knicks and Pistons.
  10. Paul Seymour (1968-1969): Seymour, a native of Toledo, Ohio, was born in 1928. He had a playing career from 1947-1960 with the Baltimore Bullets and Syracuse Nationals. He also served as head coach for the St. Louis Hawks (1960-1961) and Baltimore Bullets (1965-1966).
  11. Butch Van Breda Kolff (1969-1971): Born in 1922 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Van Breda Kolff also coached the Los Angeles Lakers (1967-1969), Phoenix Suns (1972), and New Orleans Jazz (1974-1977). He had a playing career from 1946-1950 with the Knicks.
  12. Terry Dischinger (1971): Dischinger, born in 1940 in Terre Haute, Indiana, served as a player-coach for the Pistons. His playing career spanned from 1962-1973 with the Chicago Zephyrs, Detroit Pistons, and Portland Trail Blazers.
  13. Earl Lloyd (1971-1972): Lloyd was born in 1928 in Alexandria, Virginia. His playing career lasted from 1950-1960 with the Washington Capitols, Syracuse Nationals, and Detroit Pistons.
  14. Ray Scott (1972-1976): Scott, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was born in 1938. He had a playing career from 1961-1972 with the Pistons, Baltimore Bullets, and Virginia Squires.

  20. Ron Rothstein (1992-1993): Rothstein, a native of Bronx, New York, was born in 1942. He also served as head coach for the Miami Heat (1988-1991) and assistant coach for several teams, including the Atlanta Hawks (1991-1992) and Cleveland Cavaliers (2003-2004).
  21. Don Chaney (1993-1995): Chaney was born in 1946 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His playing career spanned from 1968-1980 with the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, and Detroit Pistons. Chaney also served as head coach for the Los Angeles Clippers (1984-1987), Houston Rockets (1988-1992), and New York Knicks (2001-2004).
  22. Doug Collins (1995-1998): Collins, a native of Benton, Illinois, was born in 1951. He had a playing career from 1973-1981 with the Philadelphia 76ers. Collins also served as head coach for the Chicago Bulls (1986-1989), Washington Wizards (2001-2003), and Philadelphia 76ers (2010-2013).
  23. Alvin Gentry (1998-2000): Gentry was born in 1954 in Shelby, North Carolina. He also served as head coach for the Miami Heat (1995), Los Angeles Clippers (2000-2003), Phoenix Suns (2009-2013), and New Orleans Pelicans (2015-2020).
  24. George Irvine (2000-2001): Irvine, a native of Seattle, Washington, was born in 1948. He had a playing career from 1970-1975 with the Virginia Squires and Denver Nuggets. Irvine also served as head coach for the Indiana Pacers (1984-1986).
  25. Rick Carlisle (2001-2003): Born in 1959 in Ogdensburg, New York, Carlisle also coached the Indiana Pacers (2003-2007) and Dallas Mavericks (2008-2021). His playing career spanned 1984-1987 with the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks.
  26. Larry Brown (2003-2005): Brown, a native of Brooklyn, New York, was born in 1940. He had a playing career from 1967-1972 with various ABA teams. Brown also served as head coach for several teams, including the Denver Nuggets (1974-1979), New Jersey Nets (1981-1983), San Antonio Spurs (1988-1992), Indiana Pacers (1993-1997), Philadelphia 76ers (1997-2003), New York Knicks (2005-2006), and Charlotte Bobcats (2008-2010).
